We are fortunate that we share a passion for timeless design, unique objects and treasure hunts. We thoroughly enjoy discovering items that are well designed, crafted with care or those that have an intrinsic sentimental value. Although modernists at heart we are also intrigued by objects from the art nouveau, arts and crafts, art deco and mission styles. We also appreciate objects that are one of a kind or invoke a sense of delight regardless of the period or “style”.
Being in rural Northeast Kansas we are surrounded by country, primitive and victorian collectibles so finding that one rare modernist object is quite a challenge and makes the hunt all the more enjoyable. We believe that a few well designed, unique or sentimental objects provide more pleasure than surrounding oneself with “chotzkies” and “whatnots” (if you do not know what to call it then you do not need it) and that there is far too much junque in this materialistic world. This is our little way of preserving the past and promoting useful and/or beautiful objects. We find inspiration in the following quote from William Morris who was the founding father of the Arts & Crafts movement.
If you want a golden rule that will fit everything, this is it: Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful.
So with that we have created Enlightened Matter for our mutual enjoyment.
